This year's event is going to be bigger and better than ever! We have prizes, lots of great refreshments, ice cream, and a fun filled day planned for all! This Race/Walk takes place on Saturday, September 12th, to kick-off Hazleton's Annual FUNFEST. Come and stay after the event to enjoy a day of music, food, sights, and sounds that FUNFEST and the beautiful Downtown Hazleton offers.
Two races will be held at two different times. Our first race, which kicks-off at 9:30 am, the Kid's Run is for children 10 and under. All participants in the Kid's Run will receive an award and a fun prize of their own. The other race is the Hazleton YMCA/YWCA Run for the Gold 5K Run and 5K Walk. This race starts at 10:00 am. Overall male and female runners receive a $100.00 bond and a plaque. Also, the first five male and female walkers receive a medal. Medals are awarded in all the major age categories as well. Check out some photos from last year's race: CLICK HERE So who does this event benefit? All proceeds of this event will go to benefit the Hazleton YMCA/YWCA Youth Scholarship Fund. This program goes to help underprivileged children in the Hazleton area take part in the programs the YMCA/YWCA offers and help build strong Spirit - Mind - Body. What do entrants receive? 2009 Greater Hazleton Area Festival of Races Series Our seven race series will cover the scenic Conyngham Valley and Nescopeck Trails, wind through our historic city streets and neighborhoods as runners will enjoy both flat and rolling courses. The races will offer a variety of out and backs, some with trails and others which are loops. Each race offers a unique course and different race experience from helping feed the hungry, empowering individuals to seek success on their own, promoting drug and alcohol abuse awareness to simply eating a canoli at a famous Italian Festival. You will aid the local YMCA/YWCA programs for our area youth and draw awareness to a unique fitness center that takes a stance on Health and Wellness. “The 2009 Greater Hazleton Area Festival Of Races” will kick-off with the Valley Great 8 and 4 Miler races on May 23rd 2009 and extend through the Fall race season ending with The Hazleton Health & Wellness 5K on October 17th. There will be trophies and notoriety for champions and a chance for a grand prize for eligible runners! Grand Prize Drawing: All eligible runners will have a chance to win a 32” RCA Flat Screen television. Open for runners of all ages, must finish a minimum of any four races in the race series which includes the following races, please note that while some races are same day and there are 10 different events… you can not run more than one event on the same day. Course: Out and back, gentle climb, early on with fast 1.5 mile to finish. Water on course. For runner’s safety.. NO strollers, pets, bikes, roller blades permitted. Course is open to controlled traffic. Note: Participants in the 5K walk are responsible for following rules of the race and must conform to judges or officials final decisions. THIS MEANS WALKERS MUST WALK, NOT RUN! Any walker found guilty of the offense will be disqualified. Prior to September 4th, registration is $15.00 which includes a t-shirt; after September 4th, registration is $20.00. The Kid's Run for ages 10 and under, is $5.00 including t-shirt (fee is waived if parent/guardian is a participant). Race day registration starts at 8:00 a.m. Please send form and make checks

Directions: (special directions due to FunFest road closings) From Lehighton/Jim Thorpe: Follow Route 209 for 6.8 miles. Then turn right onto PA-93. Follow PA-93 for about 11 miles. Then turn left onto Cedar Street. Proceed about 4 blocks and turn right onto Juniper Street. Follow Juniper Street about 4 to 5 blocks and the Hazleton YMCA/YWCA is on your right hand side. From I-81: Take exit 143 for PA-924 N toward Hazleton. Turn left onto PA-924 N. Continue on PA-924 N for 2.3 miles until PA-93 is reached. Make a slight right onto PA-93 and continue for 0.6 miles. Turn right Vine Street. Continue on Vine Street for 2 blocks. Make a left onto Chestnut Street and go 1 block. The YMCA is across the street. From I-80: Take exit 256 off of I-80 to merge onto PA-93. Continue for 7.7 miles. Turn left at PA-924/PA-93. Continue to follow PA-93 for about 1 mile. Turn right Vine Street. Continue on Vine Street for 2 blocks. Make a left onto Chestnut Street and go 1 block. The YMCA is across the street. From Tamaqua and Allentown: Take 309 N (from Tamaqua (10 miles)/ from Allentown (40 miles). You will see the Hazleton YMCA/YWCA on your right hand side. It across the street from Wendy's.
